LeAnne and Keith are the most laid back, awesome to be with couples ever! This January they came back from Florida to have a piece of the holidays and Cincinnati in their wedding!

This attractive couple were married in Florida on a beach and staged an elaborate reception for here in LeAnne's hometown for all those who couldn't attend.

We reserved time at one of the quintessential "Cincinnati" locations, the Krohn Conservatory!

You can always count on Krohn for a lush and warm place to photograph on cold Cincinnati winter days!

LeAnne and Keith were a real treat to work with! Another wonderful addition to this shoot was the beautiful Megan Koabel as my sidekick! It was a great time and I'l have even more to show you next week!

One thing the lovely LeAnne was adamant about was to make sure to get some winter in her photos to prove to her Floridian friends what it's like, so we braved and icy trek across the Conservatory campus to take some photos with the ice that covered everything!

So I just finished a fabulous wedding reception last night, but you'll have to give me a week to process that!

In the mean time, I have been playing around with the 8 megapixel camera on the iphone 4s.

I'm pretty sure that is as large a file as the first professional SLR I bought. Times are changing :)

While this format is convenient I still am constantly disappointed by the lack of control. :(

I know there's the hype about having the first wedding shot entirely on iphones. But I am SURE that wedding party was one patient group of people. There's no way you could depend on this for high quality action.

Having said that, I love being able to take photos with auto focus. About 98% of the photos that came out of the Iphone 3G were out of focus.

And Steph is Awesome.

By the way just got a QR code generator so the loneliest of smart phoners can connect with my non flash propaganda! Enjoy!

Nothing Beats Snowflakes!

Every year since I got my 60mm macro (and good enough to take them) I've ventured out into the winter wilderness to click off some breathless numb-fingered close-ups of some of mother nature's finest crystals!

This year so far hasn't been the best for really nice looking flakes. :(

Most people don't realize that there are lots of types of snow and some of them are fluffy oddly shaped clumps and sometimes it's perfectly formed broad flakes.

When you see that type of flake you have to jump because you might only see two or three snows where you can take good photos. Too bad for this year:)

So last night, in what had to be the most fun baby friendly evening ever, Steph, Seth, Kris, Terri, Viv, and Myself got a great idea to take "Shake Face" pictures last night. (You know... where you shake your face really hard and take a high speed picture to preserve the distortion!)

Turns out, while cool, not flattering. :) I'm not about to show anyone the full face images. :)

Matt and Ginny's Winter Wedding!

My last wedding of the season was a wonderful winter affair!

Matt and Ginny's wedding was magnificent!

We began the shoot at a historic mansion in Cincinnati for some elegant portraits!

Ginny has the pleasure of working in the top floors of this beautiful building and she wasted no time showing Matt who was the boss here at her desk. :)

From the elegance of the mansion to the bustle and energy of Krohn Conservatory!

My good friends at Krohn let us photograph at the only beautifully green and lush place in Cincinnati at the time!

But then, after a sweet ceremony complete with hand written poetry... it was time for a reception!!

It was a wonderful wedding and Terri and I were grateful to be able to end a fantastic year with such a wonderful couple! Thank you Matt and Ginny! Sorry it took so long!

Christmas Miracle for Austin

Our title is a little joke on the weather I think! December 15th Senior portrait shoot!! In a T and shorts! Now that's a miracle!

Austin just showed up in his Maserati ready for a December showdown.

Despite it being two weeks from Christmas and dark we managed to fake it.

15 min into the shoot it was all iso 1250 and 6th of a second shutter!

TEDx Cincinnati's Women's Conference

For those of you that aren't familiar with TED click HERE, TED is about bringing innovative, creative, inspiring, and empowering ideas to a mass audience for the betterment of mankind! Pretty cool, right?

This conference was only different in one respect, the wonderful Jami Edelheit and host, Carla Walker (above) geared the magnificent night primarily towards women!

Erik's Photoshoot

This is my friend Erik.

I told him he looked kinda like Ian Anderson, but I'm changing my opinion to more like the year 1972 in general.

This guy is awesome, the more we talked, the more we had in common.

Skateboarding, bass guitar, punk rock, having cool parents, we had a similar past. It was a pleasure to create such personal and really cool images for his senior portraits!

For everyone of the seniors that we photograph every session is unique.

This is the symbol for Erik's band which he told me was a pirate pumpkin, but I never caught the name.

After the obligation of the formal "portraiting" was over Erik and I got to the business of creating something extra different! First we have an over the top board slide...

and finished with a fog machine studio rockstar shot (with the setup from "Long Live Rock" Erick is THAT cool!)

Last weekend I got to hang out with the Coops!

Mikaela and Mackenzie are some fun young ladies and they thought I was crazy.

We spent about 20 minutes in the sun taking some amazing photos just after most of the leaves fell from the trees.

A good time was had by all!

The Wedding of Megan and Dan!

I have another seriously awesome one for you!

Megan and Dan are the type of people that can't stop having fun! They make me so happy!

I got to spend a weekend with this beautiful couple to preserve the wacky, zany, and all around gorgeous events of their wedding!!

No shortage on charisma with Dan!

This is an image from the Day After session, where we were all way more tired than we thought we'd be :)

While we make sure to take the formal elegant documentary style photography that has been popular since 1930 or so ...

But, I'm not lying when I say that the best photography comes from a collaboration between the wedding party and the photographer :)

To say that Megan is a "knockout" is an understatement!

From the rehearsal to the day after here, Meg & Dan were full of amazing and awesome ideas to create some really special images.

Not really surprising though, knowing that Megan is a talented photographer in her own right. Check out Meg Koabel Photography HERE!

Photographing photographers has been a trend here recently so I'd like to introduce you to JBowe, the Maid of Honor and also a photographer at Violet Bow photography. :)

Nothing like working for your peers to force you to kick it into high gear, huh?

And Kick Terri and I did! Every wedding or event I try to come up with something that we can do that will be better than ever before. For this reception we set up 3 point lighting gelled to match the wedding colors with fantastic results!

They had a photo booth too, this couple loved photography! (No pressure)

Meghan and Mike's Candle Lit Wedding

Two weeks ago I got invited with my talented and beautiful wife to preserve the special moments of Meghan and Mike's candle lit wedding! It was fantastic!

We started the day on the 16th floor of one of the fine downtown Cincinnati Hotels!

What an amazing beginning!

Truly fans of the urban scenery Terri and I met up with Mike at his groomsmen's house downtown.

The wedding itself was at the fabulous Bell Event Center, also downtown.

Matt is awesome! This guy never stopped smiling and rockin it! With a little help from OJ Santiago we managed to persuade Matt to speed his Lexus down the old horse-cart width alleys in Cincinnati and straight into my camera! Fun times!

I think Matt's entering this one in a magazine contest or something. :)

Not only is Matt too cool for words, his family came along for the experience and they too are amazingly awesome people! We snuck in a few family portraits and talked about photographing a Ferrari on top of a building! I can't wait! I'll need OJ for that one too!

It was a great day, we even got to take a few pictures with the Occupy Beautiful Downtown City Parks people and a wayward Bengals fan.

Matt and his family kept it cool the whole time. :)

Danielle is one intriguing character!

In addition to playing awesome bassoon, Danielle is a talented artist and photographer...

In fact, I hear she's a quick study at everything!

It was a beautifully overcast day that bathed the landscape in an even diffused light!

When we showed up at Cincinnati's Ault Park boy was I surprised to see another photographer with an off camera flash and Zumbrella! I quickly walked over to see who it was and size up my competition when I saw that it was none other than Mr David Ziser and his Fall Master's Class!

After catching up with the gang, Danielle Terri and I muscled our way through the ocean of gleeful photogs learning the profession the right way to grab a few shots at the famous Pavilion!

Bethany and Norm's Amazing Wedding!

Beyond being a beautiful couple on the outside, our friends Norm and Bethany are beautiful to the core. It was my pleasure to be asked to preserve their special moments at their wedding last week!!

Terri and I got to try out some really awesome new techniques that really made the coverage amazing, which was really important to us!

As you can imagine people of this caliber are surrounded by equally amazing friends and family! Norm's groomsmen were hilarious, they never stopped smiling and having a great time! Bethany's bride's maids were elegant, kind, and beautiful!

And Bethany, herself... stunning!

It was a beautiful day!

Absolutely breathtaking! Lucky Norm!

I have to say my beautiful wife, Terri, is making me nervous she may take over as main shooter! Her images from this wedding were outstanding! It's hard to believe that she can take amazing shots like these while holding our off camera light! Check her out!

And speaking of great photographers... the beautiful Bethany worked in the wedding industry and invited scores of her photog friends! Check out the day from the perspective of Eddy Wong, Harbison Studios, and Kalyn Mann. All combined I think we could make a spot animation movie!

To elaborate about Norm and Bethany, they are amazing spirits that lighten up a room. Norm has always been industrious, dedicated, and kind. Bethany is gorgeous, genuine, warm, and graceful! SO Nice! They were great and can't take a bad photo!

This one is just amazing!

Ginny and Matt's Engagement Session

This week I had a fantastic experience photographing Ginny and Matt's engagement session. They are truly in love and just being around them i can tell you their feelings are contagious!

Family portrait!

What a great couple! They are very easy to work with and so nice!

I just can't wait for their December wedding!

We hiked all over Ault Park, one of the couples favorite places, to find some really amazing scenes in which to place the smitten couple!

We even got to the pavilion to grab a few last images at sunset (some with mom and dad too!)!

It was a wonderful time!

Ronald McDonald House Red Tie Gala

Last weekend I had the privilege of being the event photographer for the Ronald McDonald House's charity fund raiser, the Red Tie Gala.

Along with splendid decor, the event included a silent auction, fine dining, and a live auction!

Another exceptional show was the speed painting performance from artist Tim Decker. In under 5 minutes each he created amazing portraits of iconic images! His paintings were auctioned off first and drew in 15 thousand dollars to start!

One thing that impressed me about this event was the generosity of our fellow citizens here in Cincinnati. Near the end our auctioneer simply asked "Who will donate $10,000 for the charity?" and 5 or 6 people raised their cards. When no $10,000 donations were left he asked "Who will donate $5,000? And 15 more people raised their cards. This went on until the amount reached $100. Each person donating received a balloon, the silver was for 10K, the gold 5K. (In the picture above you can see at least $50,000 being donated and that was only a fraction on the attendees! Check out this panorama!

This is our volunteer of the year who donates his time 8 hours a day 4 days a week (and has for the last 10 years or more)!

After the event raised what must have been close to a million dollars for cancer patients and their families, the band began to play and dancing followed!

This was a tremendously eye opening experience in generosity.

Originally we had planned to take some photos at the zoo, but when we found out it closed early we moved our session to one of the beautiful parks in Blue Ash with fantastic results! (Cally was tired :( but still cute as can be! We woke her up from her nap)

This wonderful couple is Jessica and Taha, two of the most amicable and gentle people ever!

They decided to have their special evening under the stars at the Cincinnati Zoo! And it was a magnificent choice. The entire reception area was lit with millions of tiny purple led lights! It was amazing!

Jessica and Taha were a pleasure for Terri and I because they knew what they wanted. That made it simple for us to keep the style of the day true.

It was am intimate ceremony in the shadow of the Zoo's Elephant Reserve.

...and then!!! Jessica and Taha got to meet the elephants!

The Zoo has some seriously amazing facilities available for any event you might need a space for. There were animals with handlers walking around throughout the evening, amazing settings, and free reign over the whole park! I even got to see a lion at the end of the night! I can't say enough good things about it, really!

This is one for the moms :) My flash didn't recycle fast enough and the light was from Terri's off camera 580, but it catches the glee on both mom's faces while they watch their children cut the wedding cake :) So perfect!

Late in the evening, further proof that the maids of honor (there wasn't just one, they all were) were awesome, Taraheh performed a part an opera.

This really was magic. THANK YOU SO MUCH JESSICA AND TAHA!! Thank you for letting Terri and I be your photographers!

Jessica's Henna Celebration

Our beautiful bride of Last night, Jessica, also invited us to her home Thursday for the customary henna party in preparation for marriage.

They had a very skilled henna artist who quickly and elegantly added line after line of the ground leaf dye onto the wedding party. (When I can find out her contact information I'll post it.)

The detail is amazing! This lasts for two to three weeks and the bride is not allowed to do any house work while it is still on her skin! :)

One reason for excitement at the party was that I finally got to work with my great friend and very talented Reno photographer, Carrie Compton! Carrie's attention to detail and ability to absorb so much from her surroundings create images that are both emotive and dynamic. (I wanna say she started by photographing extreme mountain biking and then went to fine art photography. :)

Another fantastic reason to celebrate was that the couple just closed on a house that week! Here's our groom, Taha, and his wonderful mother Karima with the bag of shiny new keys!

Meanwhile... it's all coming together!

When Carrie and I decided to shoot together I said, what do you want to shoot? Carrie: "Details." I said, Go-(wo)Man-Go! When we were finished there were over 100 breathtaking images like the one above.

And this one :) This little parrot really didn't know what to make of me. (He's in the Nick and Terri Working post below on my shoulder.)

Last week my good friend Danny came by to create some lifestyle images for his acting resume. And what a shoot we had!

Steely-cool Danny, in addition to being a sexy fireman, just finished work on "The Avengers" movie that was being filmed in Cleveland.

He's currently working with Heyman Talent agency's Cincinnati office (for you director types) :)

More importantly than great images (which were REALLY important) it was great to spend the afternoon catching up with a great guy! Thanks Danny, don't forget us when you are swimming in a pool full of monocles with your wealthy Hollywood friends!!

Why I Plan for RAW and Photoshop

Yep, I rely on RAW and photoshop and I’m proud of it. So… let’s go back to the beginning of RAW. Ok, our cards held 256MB or some ridiculously low amount of memory that won’t run a watch now. The pros all lamented the transition to digital and had the “get it right in the camera” mentality. (They were right then and they are still right now.) Why on earth would you take a RAW image at 12 MB when you can take the same image in JPG at 1 MB?!? Even good ol’ David A. Ziser used to say “RAW is for Sushi” (Mmmmm Sushi.)

Ok, let me once again establish that “getting it right in the camera” should be the goal of every professional. Let me also follow up with saying, you can get a 64 GB card for your camera, so size isn’t really an issue anymore. Having said that let me tell you how I plan ahead to use on RAW files, Lightroom, and Photoshop.
I started off resisting too. Storage space was the real issue. I’m an event photographer really, and I take a lot of images (3000-4000 per wedding). When that space limitation was lifted I started shooting RAW a lot more. The cool thing was when Lightroom 1 came along. WOW! Now that was something! I could push or pull an image 2 or 3 stops! Wow! That’s handy! I didn’t even get into the other features, this one alone was a huge asset!

So why is that useful? Have you ever been shooting a wedding or an event and had someone do something cute right in front of you? You are shooting for bright sun when a mother and son embrace in a hug in the shade behind you, or the Groomsmen play a prank on the Bride under some tungsten lights. If you take the time to adjust the camera settings the moment is lost forever, so you just click one off. **Rewind back to 1990.** That cherished moment is never captured. It’s never even considered. It was just something that happened, not a special memory. Well all that is over. I clicked off that photo even though the settings were off and now I might be able to save it. I’m thinking of RAW and Lightroom as a tool here. I wouldn’t ever recommend using RAW as a crutch for being a bad photographer (get it right if you can). I just keep it in my mind that the possibility is there, the technology is available! Even though I haven’t had the time to prepare I’ll still click when the unexpected moment unfurls before me with the hopes that I can use the new tools that were developed for photographers to capture as many valuable moments for my customers as possible.

Saving images is one thing, but abusing this “save” is easy to spot. If all the photographers images have that brightly overexposed washed out look… that’s a sign. If all of the images are exposed ok, but they are super noisy (indicating they jacked up the exposure)… that’s a sign. Once again, don’t call yourself a pro if you can’t consistently deliver high quality images in ALL situations.

Now the point! What is the ability to plan for Light room, RAW, and photoshop afford you as a photographer? Lots of things, but lets take it from the perspective of a portrait photographer. What this ability to use the available technology of today to create more and better products for your customer in a shorter time affords you is TIME! Time to devote to your clients! Time to make them feel comfortable, to give you feedback on the art you are creating for THEM!

Let’s put some things into perspective. As a portrait photographer, your customer’s are your lifeline! There would be no product without their need for it, and what a better way to say to them “Thank You” than to spend a lot of time listening to them and fulfilling their needs?

On a shoot I make sure that I know how I will to create the images I have planned. That planning will allow me to feel comfortable about being able to deliver something of value to the client. Those photos are my goal. Everything else that I can create while I’m on that shoot is “icing on the cake!” It’s what makes me better than the next guy! I’m not selling only a photograph. I am selling peace of mind that the customer will be able to choose the work of art featuring themselves they like best out of several! I’m selling them on the idea that in addition to what they need, I’ll give them more! What’s more, I’m showing them that I care about WHAT I’m creating for them by making them my priority, taking their feedback to make my product better for their specific needs, and spending as little time as needed working the camera.

Vivan Update

She's doing great and growing! 26 inches and 14 lb.

She got her first tooth with a second coming in right now (hence the carrot above) and she's saying "mmmmm" sounds as well as....

Peter and Colleen's Magnificent Wedding!

What a magnificent use of rain on a wedding day! Last Sunday Peter and Colleen had a fabulous wedding at the beautiful Memorial Hall in Downtown Cincinnati Ohio!

The Hall has an amazing theater on the second floor that was the scene of the lovely couple's intimate ceremony!

Colleen and Peter were especially interested in my light painting and other fun creative imagery, so the beautiful Terri and I didn't let them down!

And who says rain is no good on a wedding day? When you have as much elegance and design IN your location any weather outside is a bonus!

Once Vernard got control back everything was fine though. :)

My Friend the Enigmatic Ben

This is Ben, expert in swords, modeling, and the intricacies of Italian mask making.

We headed out to the same office park (that I had discussed last week) to take some stunning senior portraits...

And a few theatric images with the aforementioned hand crafted Italian masks!

Ben is a really awesome guy who's laid-back cool demeanor was a breath of fresh air.

In addition to all the other awesome things Ben is interested in, he also brought along full Scottish garb to go with the fine weaponry!

We ended with a few creepy photos of the hand painted masks, this one is notably mischievous (from the super long nose on the mask).

Thank you again Ben! This was certainly a fun and memorable shoot!

The fabulous model Emily D and I went out last Saturday for two reasons.

We wanted an equally fabulous glamor shoot and wanted to check out this "bamboo forest" at Farbach Werner nature preserve.

While the forest wasn't what we had in mind, we still created some amazing images (after getting 200 mosquito bites and breaking their fence :) )

So then the beautiful Emily, Terri, Vivian, and I regrouped and made our way to a few more choice locations nearby to complete our glamor shoot with the kind of images that would really show off Emily's talent.

The Stylin Mr. Kirby

Up and coming model Jeremiah Kirby and I got together earlier this week, finally. WE had been planning a combination shoot for months.

My friend Bryttin Christensen has just finished up her thesis at the Cincinnati Academy Paul Mitchell Partner School and needed some photographs to show off her creations! I was lucky enough to get to help!

Bryttin wanted a retro/vintage feel for the images to match the style of the hair, clothes, and make-up.

We took all kinds of images to show off the hair and make up and style, but I just couldn't resist taking a few portrait style images!

NERO CINCINNATI

Speaking of HOT! Another steamy sweltering shoot this week was one of my favorite freak shows, NERO Cincinnati!

Every few months hundreds of people from all over the eastern US to form a collective unscripted play that lasts for a week and is seriously intense!

This week-long quasi-play was particularly lively!

There were some pretty elaborate and awesome costumes too. This fellow drove 14 hours from Florida to attend!

I have to stay back, because the fighting is pretty intense and I have no need to get a camera slapped out of my hands with a stick. :)

A Muggy Sunday with the Schneiders

Jessica Kenney Update!

A while back I got to photograph singer, songwriter Jessica Kenney at the Loveland Castle. This is the finished image for one of Jessica's upcoming projects. The deal was, when I arrived at the castle I found out that one of the band had just gotten into an accident! Luckily no one was hurt, but there was no way to make it to the castle in time for the shoot. So we caught up with them at practice and created the image we needed to pretend like he was there :) I had help from OJ Santiago as well!

Mitchell's Adventure

There are times when you cross paths with people and think to yourself right there, "I really hope we stay in contact because there aren't many people like you." In this case it's a family. And this is Mitchell.

Mitchell is a really awesome energetic guy. We met Mitchell through his brother Tyler (also an amazing guy), and then met their amazing mother Kym when Terri was teaching at Little Miami! They are an inspiring and wonderful family of genuinely caring and adventurous people. So much fun to be with!

Mitchell, Tyler, Terri, and I had a great time traversing downtown Cincinnati amidst Shriner's parades, giant caravans of cargo trucks, and construction to some of the grandest places for all types of portraits everyone can enjoy: From grandma to your craziest friends!

At Friendship park on the river we found this amazing mirror! (I told Mitchell I wasn't going to pay him just because he was the subject AND the background in the photos!)

An Afternoon with the Outstanding Olivia!

Sometimes it just clicks.

That was the case for Terri and I when we got to go out on a sunny flower safari with Ms. Olivia!

She said she was nervous at first, but from the start she was lovely, elegant, and a dream to work with!

Terri and I picked out two locations with some really awesome diversity to make sure Olivia's senior portraits wold be the best!

She even rounded out the location pool with this AWESOME sunflower field!

BEAUTIFUL!

I told her on the shoot, and I'll say it again. You just can't take a bad photograph of Olivia!

From every angle, we found the most beautiful places to pose with petals around Blueash OH!

Jim and Stephanie's Wedding Celebration!

Two weeks ago Terri an I captured treasured moments for a very special couple, Jim and Stephanie.

We met the beautiful bride in the hotel suite to document the day!

Stephanie seeing herself as a bride for the first time. :)

Stephanie was wonderful to work with, her bubbly personality and jovial family were a spectacular highlight of the day!

Jim defends our country in the Navy and instead of flower girls the lovely couple changed it up with 3 flag bearers. (sure they had the rings too :)

Stephanie loves pink! From the icing in the cake to the fountain at the reception, to the shoes on her feet. The pink accents were perfect!

The handsome Jim finally gets to spend some time with his beautiful wife!

The wedding party was impressive, 8 on both sides! To celebrate the wedding Jim, Stephanie and the whole gang took a party bus up to Miami University where the couple met! It was a blast!

And anyone who went to Miami will no doubt recognize Skippers restaurant, another must!

Rekers Birthday Bash 2011 Hat-Stravaganza!

Once a year a celebration of titanic proportions consumes Cincinnati and or a nearby suburb... That celebration happened yesterday.

(After a quick briefing near the lady squeezing geese statue in Mainstrasse the group took to the hats and nearby bars to unleash total carnage!)

Kris Reker's Birthday Bash, and this year... social experiment HAT-STRAVAGANZA!

I'm sporting the Victorian style here at the beginning. BUT! The rules stated that everyone stay in character and that hats would randomly switch through out the night!

And the knit cap was the "Hat Burglar" and could take any hat he/she wanted and leave you to turn to a life of crime as well!

I created this really dreamy quality with all the images by keeping my shutter speed at 1/6th of a seconds and let the flash expose my subjects while i moved the camera.

Autumn's Steaming Summer Shoot!

Autumn is super awesome. We braved a heat index of 102 at 6 o' clock to saunter around the finer parts of downtown Cincinnati Ohio for some beautiful senior portraits!

My beautiful wife Terri and I chose one of our favorite locations on the west side of downtown for it's complimentary textures and diversity of classic architecture.

It's nice to be able to get vintage images like this...

And then a block later look like you're swimming in a meadow of wildflowers in the middle of downtown...

And end up in the posh contemporary section. :)

Breaking from my normal strobist style, here's a few available light images with my sigma.

Autumn looks great in every one of these! And it's hard for me to believe she wasn't sweating considering it was SO HOT! I was drippy in the near 100 degree heat, but Autumn kept it cool. Amazing!

Modern Day Pin Up Calendar - Part 2

So here's the second half of the year ladies and gentlemen! I'm quite proud of the image above, I think this session was my favorite of the calendar. Thinking about it now, it's probably because we got a real stunt bi-plane to pose with, and I eventually got to chase it around the sky thanks to Andy and Tico!

In some cases budget and time just didn't allow for the full blown concept we had so we pulled inspiration from the flat minimalist backgrounds of american painter Gil Elvgrin. (The fire pole here is a broken lamp :)

This shoot was a scream. Sorry. Anyway, really it was taken the same night as July above, but it was about 20 degrees outside with wind. It was a really fun shoot and the cold just made us work more efficiently. :)

Once again, all of these images are for a really thoughtful and stylish gift for my friend's husband. Thank you SO MUCH Tina and Danny for letting me share these. This whole project was ultra fun. Tina and I had to coordinate this elaborate plot while Danny was at work so it would stay a surprise (and it took several months)! ...and Danny, I'm so glad you didn't find Tina's phone with messages like "We can't do it tonight, Danny stayed home sick." and come try to kill me. :)

Modern Day Pin Up Calendar

It all started about a year ago. Tina had a fantastic idea to surprise her beloved husband (and awesome fireman stud) Danny!! A modern day pin up calendar!!!

So, Tina is a genius. She had most of the concepts well thought out by the time we started production. All I needed to do was create the image that she had constructed. It was a great team. With the help of my wonderful wife Terri and master automotive photographer OJ Santiago, the whole calendar was a joy to create!

This is actually Danny. We snatched a few images from their engagement session for the calendar when December started creeping up on us :) But with the shamrock dress we thought this would be a fine March.

Gem and Mineral show!

I love collecting rocks. In fact, my entire house is filled with them. Each summer and fall the Sharonville Convention Center hosts a gem and mineral show and Terri and I can't resist it!

This show was strange because, despite the name of the annual convention it is now mostly beads. :(

Luckily the remaining gem and stone vendors are high quality! (They were where we traditionally spend most of our money each year anyway.)

This trip was extra fun because we brought friends and family to join in the geological nerding.

This rock reminds me of my sister Julie who was sporting some rainbow hair her boyfriend Keifer was quick to point out is the same color pattern as "those duster things." Well played.

Since I've taken so many photos of the spoils of the continuous trips to the gem and mineral show I wanted to photograph the stones in a fun way. I hope I achieved it. :)

Baker Family!

but not how I expected! Photo - Sorta - Stolen!!

So, Above is an image I took in 2007 while camping in Hocking Hills. The cool thing about it is when I was editing my photos from the trip, I was lightening this one and noticed a figure standing in the Moonville Tunnel. Now this situation might not have been that extraordinary either if it weren't for the fact that there was no one in the tunnel when I took the picture and the Moonville Tunnel is haunted!

So I sent the image to the HauntedHocking.com people hoping they might like to use it (which they did). Hocking Hills is a beautiful place and if ghost tourism is getting people to enjoy nature I'm for it. Then February 2010 some producers from California call me to try to license the image for the show "A&E's My Ghost Story." I retain owner ship and get credit, no money, but the advertisement would be nice, right? So I agreed. They even mentioned flying me out to California or some such nonsense. All this is contingent upon if it all goes through.

Last I hear of it until more producers call me this week asking to use the image again... New deal sweet!

I once again agree and this time even make a little cheese (if it goes through of course)! Then they calling me back saying their copyright or some department found my image actually aired last October on My Ghost Story!! Well that's pretty cool, right?

THE PROBLEM WAS...

When my image is featured, and it is featured! This guy is on camera talking about the Tunnel. Then he says "In one image I took..." and my image flashes up full screen again. :( That can ruin your day.(Nice orange rim light, too)

What's worse, when I called the producers, the person I had initially talked to was shocked and looked into it. When I got a call back it was from a suspiciously stern woman who, in short, gave me the answer "I didn't edit the piece, these things happen, Sorry." in the least sincere delivery possible.

Sure, they agreed to add my credit to the show, but I'm not holding my breath.

So as shocked as I am I'm lucky I didn't lose my cool, but really... I don't have a TV and if this one thing was going to make or break me, I have bigger problems. I didn't even find out they used it for 9 months. :)

So instead I told her I wasn't looking for vengeance and I wasn't some Ohio goon threatening to drive to LA and poison her poodle, I just wanted the credit due for my work. I also suggested she send word up the chain of command that their business practices were shady at best and I didn't appreciate their bait and switch tactics (this is where she once again informed me that she had not edited the program).

Class act I must say (<--- this is sarcasm)

It's my belief that the guy on the show was in no way responsible. I think my photo is super crazy though, I even sent them an enlargement which they flash up as well in the show. It was just the strongest image, so while the other fellow is on camera talking about his image of the motion blur thing, my image is on the screen. :( Now, while they did have license to "juxtapose the material" any way they saw fit, I can hardly believe that is what people are imagining reading those words. And if that's really the legal definition we're all #&@%'ed.
